World War I (1914-1918)
When war erupted in Europe in September of 1914 and then quickly engulfed the entire continent, Americans were nearly unanimous in their determination not to get involved. President Wilson spent his first term struggling to keep America out of the war and ran for reelection in 1916 on the slogan, "He Kept Us Out of War". However, within months of second inauguration, he was asking Congress for a declaration of war against Germany and her allies. How America went from being firmly committed to neutrality to becoming a combatant is one area of focus for this sub-unit. And, even though American involvement in the war was comparatively brief, the war profoundly affected Americans. How America was affected by the war experience is our other focus.
